Bikepacking in Colombia

Why Choose Colombia for Bikepacking?

Colombia’s geography makes it an ideal destination for bikepacking. The country is home to a wide variety of ecosystems, including mountains, jungles, deserts, and coastal areas. Whether you're a seasoned rider looking for a demanding journey or a beginner in search of a scenic route, Colombia has something for everyone.

Moreover, the cycling culture in Colombia is thriving. With internationally renowned cyclists like Nairo Quintana and Egan Bernal, the spirit of cycling runs deep within the country. Locals are often welcoming to bikepackers, and the country's network of paved and unpaved roads offers plenty of opportunities for exploration.

Colombia’s climate varies depending on the region and altitude, but in general, the best time for bikepacking is during the dry seasons, which run from December to March and July to August. During these months, you’ll encounter fewer rain showers, making the roads and trails easier to navigate.

However, some regions, like the Andes and Sierra Nevada, experience cool temperatures and frequent rainfall year-round. It’s essential to pack appropriately for a wide range of weather conditions, especially if you're planning to bike through high-altitude areas.

Essential Tips for Bikepacking in Colombia

  • Bring a versatile bike: The terrain in Colombia can vary from smooth paved roads to rough gravel tracks, so a sturdy gravel or mountain bike is ideal.
If don't want to bring your bike you can rent one here: https://scarabcycles.com/collections/bike-rental?&
  • Prepare for altitude: Many of Colombia’s bikepacking routes involve significant elevation changes. Take time to acclimate if you're not used to high altitudes. We recommend you arrive with a minimum of three days before starting to ride.
  • Stay hydrated and fueled: The climate can be hot and humid, particularly in the lowland regions, so carry plenty of water and snacks. Bocadillo is our favorite snack to carry while riding.
  • Learn some Spanish: While many Colombians are friendly and helpful, English is not widely spoken in rural areas. Learning basic Spanish phrases can make your journey smoother. Otherwise buy a sim card so that you can have wifi and use a translator everywhere.
  • Pack an extra pair of shoes when riding in Colombia—the weather can be incredibly unpredictable! You might be cycling under clear, sunny skies one moment, only to find yourself in a sudden downpour the next. So be sure your extra pair of shoes are water friendly, of coure our favorite ones are Berts.

Colombia is a dream destination for bikepacking, offering diverse landscapes, challenging routes, and the opportunity to experience the country's vibrant culture and history. Whether you're scaling the Andes or cruising along the coast, every ride in Colombia promises a thrilling adventure. The country’s warm climate provides an escape from winter, while its rich culture and vibrant communities make every ride an unforgettable journey.

In Colombia, bikepacking is more than a sport—it’s a way to connect with nature, history, and welcoming locals who share a passion for adventure. If you’re looking for a destination that combines challenge, beauty, and thrill, Colombia is the perfect place to start.
